Bed Woodworking Plans

Bed Woodworking Plans

Hello,

My name is Steve Barker, I have been a DIY enthusiast for more years than I care to remember and amongst the things I have built over the years are bunk beds, bed frames and headboards.  Bed woodworking plans are a valuable guide to getting a good night’s sleep. And it is really satisfying to build your own bed but you need to do it right.

Building a bed is not difficult if you have a good plan and it is best to use a plan, after all you don’t want to end up sleeping on the floor.

Beds come in a standard range of sizes but more importantly so do mattresses. Now you can build the best bed ever, but if you get a cheap mattress  you may as well sleep on the floor in fact you would be better off. Nothing worse than waking up in the morning (or evening if you are a shift worker) with a stiff back because the mattress you chose didn’t have the right support.

When you choose a mattress  take my advice and try them out, don’t just go on price and make sure you have the right size for the bed or beds you are going to build. You don’t have to get the mattress first but it at least decide what size you are going to buy then choose a bed woodworking plan to suit.

There are a lot of different styles of bed and there are plans for just about all of them, here’s a few examples

and a whole host of other  bed woodworking plans.

Once you have chosen the size and style of bed that you want to build you need to decide on the finish you want as this may affect you choice of timber used in the frame.

If for example you want a polsihed natural wood finish you’ll need to choose a hardwood to suit. Or  for a lower cost option but with a similar finish you could use pine  which has the structural integrity you need and will take a whole range of finishes. Pine is good with a clear estapol (lacquer) finish in matt, semi-gloss or gloss. Pine will take just about any stain you you choose, there are many water based stains available that can be applied and when dry sealed with a clear coat of estapol.

Pine is also good for a painted finish, use a knotting sealer on any knots you can see first or you may some resin bleed through the paint then give it a wood primer coat, undercoat and a coupe of top coats.

Of course pine is not the only timber you can use but it is very versatile and can even be turned on a wood lathe.

Now if you don’t have a wood lathe you can always buy turned pieces for your bed, knobs, legs etc. most large hardware stores have supplies of these pieces.
